The Technical and Mechanical Engineering Faculties

A monumental complex with inner courtyards and expressive sculptural articulation, embodying the idea of engineering knowledge as a “temple of progress” and symbolizing the contribution of Russian specialists to the modernization of Belgrade.

At last, we move on to the technical building and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The building of the technical faculties on King Alexander Boulevard was constructed between 1926 and 1931 with the active participation of Grigory Samoylov. It is monumental and arranged like a city within a city: a branching ground plan, inner courtyards, a powerful central accent, and a ceremonial staircase.

The sculptural and architectural articulation emphasizes the status of engineering knowledge as a “temple of progress,” but behind this pathos lies a very practical reality: interwar Belgrade is modernizing, building, laying down infrastructure. And in this modernization, Russian specialists participate as bearers of exclusive knowledge, which they share with the local environment with great respect: through teaching, engineering schools, and professional associations.

The final stop on our route, the farthest from the city centre, is the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Belgrade.
